Canero
Under the guidance of Cuban master rum-maker Juan Alberto Álvarez, Cañero emerged in 2014 as a rum line that deliberately foregrounds its Dominican origin - a tribute to the Dominican farm workers who have cultivated and harvested sugar cane for generations. Unlike many solera rums, which are molasses-based, Cañero consistently uses pure, freshly pressed cane juice in the Spanish tradition, aged using the classic solera method - an unusual combination of Dominican raw material and centuries-old Spanish maturation technique. What does the name Cañero mean?
"Cañero" is the Spanish term for the farm workers who traditionally cultivate and harvest sugar cane - the brand name is a deliberate tribute to this often-overlooked foundation of rum production in the Dominican Republic.
What connects Cañero to the Summum brand?
Cañero was introduced in 2014 as a standalone line under the Summum brand umbrella, also under the guidance of master rum-maker Juan Alberto Álvarez - both brands thus share the same origin and style.
Flavour profile
Taste: Fresh and fruity with floral notes from the pure cane juice, complemented by a fine wood spice from solera maturation - the malt whisky finish variant adds a subtle, smoky depth.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or on the rocks as a digestif, to enjoy the interplay of cane freshness and cask spice.
Available as Cañero 12 Year Old Malt Whisky Finish.
