Rum from Cuba
In 1862, Don Facundo Bacardí Massó revolutionised rum-making in Santiago de Cuba by distilling a smooth, light rum from what had until then been a rustic sugarcane spirit - the birth of what remains the world's best-selling rum today. More than seven decades later, in 1934, the sugar-producing Arechabala family created a second defining Cuban brand with Havana Club. On 13 October 1960, Fidel Castro nationalised all 105 sugar mills and 19 distilleries on the island - but the Bacardí family had foresightedly moved their yeast strains, recipes and trademark rights to the Bahamas and Mexico in time, while the Arechabala family lost their production facilities and brand rights without compensation. A single nationalisation thus gave rise to two separate rum traditions: Bacardí, continued in exile, and Havana Club, produced by the Cuban state ever since.

Why are there two rival "Cuban" rum brands?
After the 1960 nationalisation, the Bacardí family rescued their recipes into exile, while the Arechabala family lost their facilities and brand rights to the Cuban state without compensation - both sides have continued producing under different ownership ever since.
What defines Cuban rum stylistically?
The "Ron Ligero" style pioneered by Bacardí relies on multiple distillation and charcoal filtering, producing an especially smooth, light rum - a deliberate contrast to the heavier molasses rums of other Caribbean islands.
