Swedish Whisky
On a skiing trip, eight Swedish friends decided that their country finally needed its own whisky - in March 1999 they went on to found Mackmyra, Sweden's first whisky distillery, and on 18 December of that same year the first raw spirit flowed from the still. After testing 170 recipes, the result was settled in 2002: Mackmyra Elegant and Mackmyra Smoke. To this day, part of the whisky matures 50 metres underground in the disused Bodås mine, while since 2011 the purpose-built, eight-storey "Gravity Distillery" near Gävle has operated on the gravity principle - ingredients travel from top to bottom through the tower, cutting energy consumption by around 45%. Considerably younger is Smögen, only founded in 2009, which has specialised in boldly peated single malts.
