Spiced Rum
When beverage conglomerate Seagram acquired the Jamaican Long Pond distillery in the 1940s, the new owners came across an unusual customer: the Levy Brothers, a Kingston pharmacy that had been spicing up the rum it bought with its own blend of herbs and spices. Seagram boss Samuel Bronfman - the same man who had created Crown Royal for the Canadian royal visit just a few years earlier - promptly bought the rights to this recipe and used it as inspiration to found the Captain Morgan brand in 1944. Its namesake was the Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan (1635-1688), who in the 17th century, as a feared privateer commissioned by the English crown, fought Spanish ships in the Caribbean - a historically resonant choice for a brand that remains one of the world's best-selling spiced rums to this day.
