French Whisky
In 1900, Léon Warenghem founded a spirits distillery in Lannion, Brittany, which is still considered France's oldest today and only turned to whisky decades later: the first blend of malt and grain whisky arrived in 1987, before Armorik became the first-ever French single malt in 1998. It's no coincidence that Brittany of all places became the cradle of French whisky - as one of the six Celtic nations alongside Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, it shares a cultural kinship with the great whisky nations. In 2015, the French state honoured this distinctiveness with the protected geographical indication "Whisky Breton" - a seal of quality that only whiskies from Brittany have been allowed to carry ever since.

Why is "Whisky Breton" a protected designation?
In 2015, the French state granted Brittany a protected geographical indication (PGI) for whisky - comparable to Scotch whisky or Irish whiskey, only whisky meeting Breton production criteria may carry this name since then.
Where does the water for Armorik come from?
From a natural spring called Rest Avel, located a hundred metres beneath the distillery - the low-limestone water from Breton granite helps shape the whisky's character.
