Old Grand Dad

In 1785, Basil Hayden Sr. led a group of 25 Catholic families from Maryland to Kentucky - and soon made a name for himself there with a bourbon that had a notably higher rye content than was typical at the time. Nearly a century later, in 1882, his grandson Raymond B. Hayden, himself a third-generation distiller, honoured his grandfather's legacy with a new brand: Old Grand-Dad, adorned with a fanciful portrait of Basil Hayden Sr. on every bottle. With a rye content of around 27 percent - more than double that of classic bourbon - Old Grand-Dad remains a bold, spicy character among American whiskeys to this day. Confusion often arises with the similarly named Basil Hayden's brand, created by Booker Noe in 1992, which despite sharing its namesake is a completely separate product.

Are Old Grand-Dad and Basil Hayden's the same whiskey?

No - a common mix-up. Old Grand-Dad was created in 1882 by Raymond B. Hayden in honour of his grandfather Basil Hayden Sr. Basil Hayden's, on the other hand, is a completely separate brand developed by Booker Noe in 1992, which merely honours the same historical namesake but is neither related nor identical in recipe or origin.

What makes the high rye content special?

With around 27% rye, Old Grand-Dad contains more than double the rye of a typical bourbon - giving it a noticeably spicier, bolder character than milder, wheat-forward bourbons.
