Glentauchers

Translation: Valley of the wind

Where tradition flourishes in secret.

Glentauchers? Even among those interested in whiskey, many would shrug their shoulders. Because the distillery belongs more to the unknown sizes of the whiskey world. First, because there are only a few bottlings of this malts. What is produced at Glentauchers, almost without exception went into the big blended whiskeys: Black & White, Teachers, Ballantines ... In addition, the distillery itself is rather reserved and has no visitor center. What a pity, because there would be something for tradition-conscious whiskey fans to see. Glentauchers, founded in 1897, is one of the few distilleries to consistently rely on old techniques. Almost everything is done here as in the early days by hand, without a computer. This happens very consciously. Because Glentauchers serves as a kind of historical training center for employees from different distilleries of the owner. Here you can learn the basics of burning. As it has been known for centuries. Long Live Glen Dipper!

A little history

Glentauchers was founded in 1897 by WP Lowrie and James Buchanan. Buchanan, who had no experience in the whiskey business at the time, was soon to become one of the most influential figures in the whiskey world. Not least his "Buchanan's Black & White" gave him worldwide popularity.
The distillery was completely taken over by Buchanan in 1906. The Malt produced here went almost without exception into the Buchanan blends like the already mentioned Black & White. In 1925, Glentauchers was acquired by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), then in 1930 to the Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD). In the mid-sixties, a new fuel building was built and the two existing pot stills supplemented by four more.
In 1985, Glentauchers was decommissioned and reopened in 1989 under the new owner Allied Distillers. Allied - and thus Glentauchers - is today one of Chivas Brothers, which are part of the Pernod Ricard Group.

What do I actually have in the glass?

The few bottlings of Glentauchers show a powerful malt, which in addition to the honey sweetness also has pepper and smoky notes. Unusual.

3 reasons to love Glen-Diver

1) Because good old handwork has something sympathetic.
2) Because this Speyside malt surprises.
3) Because the hidden, the secret always has its charm.

The one drama for the lonely island

Gordon & MacPhail's 1991 refill Sherry Cask shows beautifully how Glentaucher's honey, pepper and fruity power come together.
