Glentauchers
Few Speyside distilleries lead as hidden an existence as Glentauchers: built in 1898 as a joint venture by James Buchanan & Co. and W. P. Lowrie, almost its entire output has always gone into major blended whiskies such as Black & White, Teacher's, and – to this day – Ballantine's. There is no visitor centre, and official bottlings under its own name have always been rare.
Designed by the renowned architect Charles Doig, the distillery became part of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925 and, through several mergers, now belongs to Pernod Ricard's Chivas Brothers division. Why does hardly anyone know Glentauchers?
In 1898, James Buchanan & Co. and W. P. Lowrie jointly founded the distillery on the outskirts of Keith, near the railway line between Aberdeen and Inverness. The site was designed by John Alcock in collaboration with the famous Victorian distillery architect Charles Doig. Buchanan took full control in 1906. From the very start, Glentauchers was conceived purely as a supplier for blends – a role that has not changed to this day: the malt has flowed for decades into Black & White, Teacher's, and Ballantine's. Only briefly, in the 1970s and 1980s, did Buchanan release its own distillery bottlings.
How did Glentauchers survive two world wars and several mergers?
In 1925, Glentauchers, along with the entire Buchanan-Dewar group, became part of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). During the Second World War, the distillery remained closed from 1939 to 1946, and a second time from 1985 to 1989. In 1989, Allied Distillers took over the site, which, through several further mergers, eventually came to belong to Pernod Ricard's Chivas Brothers division.
