Amrut
The Amrut distillery in Bangalore has existed since 1948, but the first Amrut single malt only appeared in 2004 – and shortly afterwards caused a stir at blind tastings in Scotland, where experienced tasters mistook the Indian whisky for Scotch. It was this whisky that put India on the international whisky map.
Amrut – meaning "elixir of life" – stands for an exotic, fruity style that matures at record speed thanks to India's climate. From the unpeated Amrut Fusion to the boldly peated Amrut Peated, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

How did an Indian whisky take the Scotch whisky world by surprise?
Amrut was founded in 1948, shortly after Indian independence, and initially supplied spirits mainly to the Indian army. It was only in 2004 that the company took the step into single malt – with resounding success: at blind tastings in Scotland, the home of single malt, Amrut convinced experienced tasters who could hardly believe they had an Indian whisky in their glass. The underdog days are long behind it; today's main distillery in Kambipura, near Bangalore, was built in 1987.
Why does Amrut mature so much faster than Scotch?
Amrut uses both barley from the Indian Himalayan region and peated malt from Scotland, allowing it to produce both unpeated and peated single malts. Long fermentation times of around 140 hours create a very fruity spirit. Bangalore's hot, humid climate matures the whisky extremely quickly – the annual angels' share is 12 to 15% (compared with 1 to 2% in Scotland), which is why Amrut whiskies leave the cask after just a few years. The distillery deliberately avoids caramel colouring and chill filtration entirely.
Overview of the most popular bottlings
1. Amrut Fusion
Amrut's most famous bottling: a marriage of 75% unpeated Indian and 25% peated Scottish barley.
Taste: Tropical fruit, caramel, and exotic spice with a fine smoky note in the background.
Serving suggestion: The recommended way into the brand.
2. Amrut
The distillery's original unpeated single malt.
Taste: Sweet and fruity with tropical notes and caramel.
Serving suggestion: For anyone wanting to get to know Amrut's base character without peat influence.
3. Amrut Peated
The peated variant, made with Scottish peated malt.
Taste: Gentle, sweetish smoke, closer to peated Highland malts than to Islay.
Serving suggestion: For peat fans looking for a milder alternative to Islay whiskies.
