Pyrat
In 1997, entrepreneur Martin Crowley opened a factory on the small Caribbean island of Anguilla to blend and bottle his new rum - originally under the name "Planters Gold", later known as Pyrat XO Reserve. Crowley, co-founder of the Caribbean Distillers Corporation, had the rum blended primarily from a bold Demerara base from Guyana. After his death in 2003, an American charitable trust first took over his estate, before Bacardi acquired a stake in 2008; bottling in Anguilla was subsequently discontinued in 2010 and production moved entirely to Demerara Distillers Ltd. in Guyana. Since Bacardi's full acquisition in 2018, Pyrat has been part of the group's global rum portfolio.

Is Pyrat still made in Anguilla?
No - the original bottling factory in Anguilla closed in 2010. Since then, Pyrat has been blended and bottled under contract by Demerara Distillers Ltd. in Guyana.
How did Pyrat end up with Bacardi?
After founder Martin Crowley's death in 2003, his company stake passed to an American charitable trust. In 2008, Bacardi acquired a significant minority stake, and in 2018 the group fully acquired the brand as part of its takeover of Patrón Spirits International.
Flavour profile
Taste: Full-bodied and spiced with orange peel, caramel and a bold, ester-rich Demerara depth from the Guyanese component.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or on the rocks, also particularly good in citrus-forward cocktails.
Available as Pyrat XO Reserve.
