Inverleven

In 1938, a small malt distillery was built on the banks of the River Clyde in the Scottish Lowlands, right next to the massive Dumbarton grain distillery - Inverleven would prove to be a loyal but tiny side operation: with only two stills, it was the smallest distillery in the portfolio of Allied Domecq, then the world's second-largest drinks conglomerate. Production ceased in 1992, and a few years later the huge neighbouring Dumbarton distillery disappeared from the market entirely too. What remained were only a handful of long-since-sold-out cask bottlings from independent bottlers - another example of the many small Lowland distilleries that met a quiet end in the shadow of larger corporate structures.

Why was Inverleven so small?

With only two stills, it mainly served as a small malt supplier alongside the huge Dumbarton grain distillery - a supporting role that made it the smallest distillery in the entire Allied Domecq group.

What happened to Inverleven and Dumbarton?

Inverleven closed in 1992, and the much larger neighbouring Dumbarton distillery followed a few years later - both disappeared from the market for good amid Allied Domecq's corporate restructuring.
