Profile: What Makes Jura 12 Year Old Special
Jura 12 Year Old is an elegant, fruity and spicy single malt from Scotland’s only distillery on the island of Jura. It matures in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks; the sherry shows in dried fruit and cinnamon. In the sample it is easy to get to know.
The Isle of Jura Distillery is in Craighouse, the island’s only village. The first legal distillery was founded here in 1810; after its closure in 1901 it was rebuilt in 1963. Since 1993 it has belonged to Whyte & Mackay. Fewer than 300 people live on the island.
Tasting Notes: What Jura 12 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Very fruity with pineapple, plum and almonds, plus freshly roasted coffee
- Palate: Fruity with hints of citrus fruit, dark toffee and ginger – some sherry with dried fruit and cinnamon
