Profile: What Makes Jura 18 Year Old Special
Jura 18 Year Old matured for at least 18 years in American ex-bourbon casks of white oak and received a finish in Bordeaux red wine barriques. It is fruity and balanced: layers of forest fruit, rich caramel and a touch of sea salt.
The first legal distillery on the Isle of Jura was founded in 1810. In its early days Jura produced a very heavily peated, almost rough malt. After the closure in 1901 the distillery was rebuilt in 1963 and fitted with larger stills that produce a milder whisky; since 1993 it has belonged to Whyte & Mackay.
The distillery is in Craighouse, the island’s only village. Fewer than 300 people live on Jura; the island is known for the Paps of Jura.
