Profile: What Makes Amrut Kadhambam Special
Kadhambam means roughly “combination” or “mixture” in the Tamil language. The whisky in this bottling matured successively in selected rum, sherry and brandy casks: regular single malt is additionally matured in casks that previously held Amrut rum, sherry or Amrut brandy, and the parts are then married in a secret ratio in refill bourbon casks. Through this kind of maturation the whisky absorbs the most varied aromas of the individual casks – the result is a very multi-layered malt.
Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 by J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale in Bangalore; his son Neelakanta Rao Jagdale decided in 1982 to enter malt distillation. On 24 August 2004 Amrut, the first single malt whisky made in India, was released.
Tasting Notes: What Amrut Kadhambam Tastes Like
- Nose: Rich and floral, plenty of honey and nuts, new oak, vanilla, fruity aromas of citrus and tropical fruit; plus sherry, dark Christmas pudding with spices, almonds and orange candy
- Palate: Candied fruit, a little oak with light peat and spice notes; plus dried fruit, plums and an oily, soft, rich mouthfeel
- Finish: Warm and complex, long and dry; plus notes of roasted coconut and citrus fruit
