Before Lochlea Farm in south-west Scotland's Ayrshire became home to a whisky distillery, it was where none other than Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, lived and worked from 1777 to 1784 – he moved to the farm with his family at the age of 18. In 2018, Neil McGeoch founded Lochlea Distillery on this very same historic farmland, consistently applying a "farm-to-bottle" concept that uses only barley grown on its own fields.

What is the connection to Robert Burns?
In 1777, the family of 18-year-old Robert Burns moved from the smaller Mount Oliphant farm to the larger Lochlea Farm in Ayrshire. Together with his brother Gilbert and his father William, Scotland's future national poet farmed the land for seven years, until 1784. This period shaped some of his earliest literary work. Over two centuries later, in 2018, this very same estate was granted permission to be converted into a whisky distillery complete with warehousing and a visitor centre.
What does "farm-to-bottle" actually mean at Lochlea?
Founder Neil McGeoch pursues a concept at Lochlea that is relatively rare in the Scotch whisky industry: all the barley used is grown on the farm's own fields surrounding the distillery – a genuine "single estate" whisky, unlike most brands, which source their grain from specialist wholesalers. The first own bottlings appeared from October 2021 onward, deliberately carrying agricultural names such as "Our Barley", "Sowing", "Harvest", or "Ploughing" – each named after its harvest year.
