Portrait: What makes the Lochlea Dark Briar special
Anyone who thinks only gentle whiskies come from the gentle Lowlands hasn't met Lochlea yet. The small farm distillery in Ayrshire has been heavily involved for a few years now - in the truest sense of the word. Independent, stubborn, and with a great deal of passion, Single Estate Whiskies are produced here: from the first stalk of barley to the last bottle, everything from a single source. Or rather, from a single farm.
With the Dark Briar, Lochlea is now adding serious flair to its new Core Range. No more limited-edition trinkets and seasonal FOMO purchases - now there's character to last. Inspired by the popular Fallow Edition, Dark Briar is the powerhouse of the family. Robust, dark, mysterious - a kind of Gothic cousin in the Lowland family.
Maturation in sherry and port casks adds considerable depth - and if you're thinking of velvet skirts, leather armchairs, and campfire romance, you're not far off the mark. Dark Briar isn't a whisky for a night spent mowing the lawn, but rather for that moment when you notice that rain is falling horizontally outside—and that's perfectly fine.
Of course, Lochlea remains true to itself here as well: The barley, as always, comes from their own farm, and the distillation takes place on-site. No tricks, no acquisitions, no shortcuts - just honest craftsmanship with plenty of flavor and even more attitude.
Lochlea Dark Briar - For those who know that depth doesn't have to be loud.
Tasting Notes: This is what Lochlea Dark Briar tastes like
- Nose: Robust and inviting with aromas of juicy red fruits. Added to this are warm hints of ginger cake and a spicy depth reminiscent of opulent baking spices.
- Palate: Full-bodied and luscious - the influence of sherry and port casks is evident in an intense, dark fruit note. The spicy nuances continue, giving the single malt a pleasant depth and structure.
- Finish: Long, warming, and powerful. The finish remains spicy and round, with a velvety impression that elegantly rounds off the character of the whisky.
