Portrait: What makes the Lochlea Smoke without Fire special
Anyone who says the Lowlands are boring has never opened a bottle of Lochlea. On a former farm in the heart of Ayrshire, whisky is produced here that not only tastes good, but also tells quite a story. And best of all: everything in it comes from our own fields - a Single Estate, in other words. Growing barley, distilling it, aging it - all done in-house. That's not only sustainable, but also quite stubborn. In a good sense.
With the Core Range, Lochlea is putting an end to the seasonal rush. No collecting stress, no release panic - simply good whiskies, all year round. One of them: Smoke without Fire. The name sounds like a Scottish saying or a poem by Robert Burns, but it's actually a clever reference to barrel management.
Because no peaty monster barrels are used here – instead, former peated refill bourbon barrels and red wine barrels. It sounds chaotic, but it's surprisingly harmonious. Like a campfire that only flickers but doesn't burn. Simply smoke without fire.
Inspired by the former Ploughing Edition, this whisky brings delicate smoky notes without intruding on the foreground. A dram with depth, but without drama. And of course: 100% made from our own barley – straight from the field on our doorstep.
Lochlea Smoke without Fire – For those who know that subtle is often more exciting than spectacular.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Lochlea Smoke without Fire tastes like
- Nose: Delicate smoky aromas like those of a distant campfire, combined with ripe red fruits and a floral sweetness. A balanced and elegant fragrance profile with fine depth.
- Palate: Harmonious and complex - red fruits meet floral accents, while the gentle peat influence remains discreetly in the background. Wine barrel aging provides subtle complexity without overpowering the character of the distillate.
- Finish: Soft and balanced with a light hint of smoke and a fruity aftertaste. The elegance remains until the end - subtle, yet present.
