Portrait: What makes the Lochlea - Ploughing Edition - Third Crop special

Over the past few years, Lochlea's seasonal small batch releases have showcased the family-run farm distillery's signature style in four different ways. As a working farm, Lochlea adapted its whiskies to the seasonal processes on the farm. The Lochlea Ploughing Edition (Third Crop) is the very last bottling of these seasonal releases - and the smokiest. The final Ploughing Edition matured exclusively in ex-Islay casks, each holding only 200 liters. Older and more robust than its predecessors, this Lowland Single Malt, at its ideal drinking strength, unfolds typical Lochlea grain and fruit aromas - in this case, crisp green apples and delicious malt biscuits - while the Islay casks bring wonderful coastal and smoky flavors into play.

Tasting Notes: How does the Lochlea - Ploughing Edition - Third Crop taste?

  • Nose: a complex and characterful aroma: Fresh, crisp green apples and malt biscuits form the aromatic foundation, typical of Lochlea. Gentle wisps of smoke and salty coastal aromas from the ex-Islay casks are layered over this, reminiscent of a fresh sea breeze
  • Palate: on the palate, the whisky is significantly stronger than its predecessors, yet excellently balanced. The sweet, grainy base is carried by ripe fruitiness, before the maritime and peaty notes of the cask aging become clearly noticeable. The combination of Lowland freshness and Islay depth gives the whisky structure and complexity
  • Finish: the finish is Medium to long finish, with a pleasantly warming impression. Malt sweetness, a hint of grain, subtle wood smoke, and salty nuances linger harmoniously on the palate - the single malt concludes with a dry, slightly spicy note
