Speyburn
In 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, Speyburn raced to produce a first cask of whisky just in time. Built by brothers John and Edward Hopkin and their cousin Edward Broughton, the distillery sits picturesquely in the wooded "Glen of Rothes" – designed by the renowned architect Charles Doig, inventor of the distillery's characteristic pagoda roof.
Speyburn stands for a medium-bodied, floral Speyside style with fruity sweetness and spicy notes. From the Speyburn Bourbon Cask to the more mature 15 Year Old, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

Why did Speyburn distil in an icy, unfinished building right before Christmas?
Speyburn's builders were determined to produce a first whisky within the jubilee year of 1897 – the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Just before Christmas, heavily wrapped workers set to work in the still-doorless, windowless still house and, in freezing cold, actually produced one cask of Speyburn malt whisky. The distillery had been founded by brothers John and Edward Hopkin together with their cousin Edward Broughton through their company John Hopkin & Co., which already owned the Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull at the time.
Who owns Speyburn today?
In 1916, the Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL) bought John Hopkin & Co., and in 1962 Speyburn passed to the Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), who closed the distillery's own malting floor in 1966. Since 1991, Speyburn has belonged to Inver House Distillers. In 2024, the distillery unveiled a redesigned core range with new names such as Bourbon Cask and Rum Cask Finish.
