Portrait: What makes the Glendalough Double Barrel special.
The Glendalough Double Barrel is an Irish Single Grain Whiskey known for its special cask maturation. After an initial maturation period in former bourbon casks, it receives an additional six-month finish in former Spanish Oloroso sherry casks - a combination that lends it depth and complexity.
The Glendalough Distillery was founded in 2011 in the Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin and is one of the pioneers of modern Irish craft distilleries. The name Glendalough (pronounced "Glen-da-lock") means "valley of the two lakes" and refers to the distillery's idyllic setting, known for its closeness to nature and artisanal approach.
Glendalough aims to combine traditional Irish whiskey styles with innovative maturation methods. The distillery places great emphasis on quality, cask management, and authenticity. The Double Barrel is a good example of this philosophy: a whiskey with strong character, a clear origin and artisanal standards, which demonstrates how versatile single grain whiskey can be – far removed from the image of a pure "blender."
The elegant packaging and modern bottle design also make it a visual eye-catcher on the shelf - ideal for connoisseurs and explorers of Irish whiskey art.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Glendalough Double Barrel tastes like
- Nose: Soft, malty aromas, then vanilla and white chocolate, with butterscotch and stewed apples, followed by marzipan and toasted oak.
- Palate: Butterscotch and vanilla cream again with slightly salty notes, then becoming fruitier with notes of red marmalade and blackberries.
- Finish: Spicy finish, oak and herbs are present
