Portrait: What makes the Brûlée Royale - Compass Box special

A whisky like a French dessert buffet in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles - Brûlée Royale is not a bottling, but an event. A limited edition for royal palates, alchemically composed by the sweet geniuses at Compass Box. Here, patisserie meets peat, and the result is... well: knee-droppingly delicious.

The idea: What if a crème brûlée lover took over the stills? The result is this silky blended malt with malts from Clynelish, Benrinnes, Speyburn, and even a hint of Ardbeg (yes, the one with the peat - but very subtle, I promise!). Matured in the finest ex-bourbon casks and specially toasted American oak - with a precision that would have even François Massialot, chef at Versailles and inventor of crème brûlée, applauding.

In the glass: a sweet storm of vanilla custard, caramelized sugar, panna cotta, tarte tatin, broiled peaches, and even a cheeky banana split. Anyone who doesn't have dessert associations here has probably just been fasting.

In the mouth? Creamy. Rich. Sinfully good. You almost feel like you should use cutlery while drinking. Or at least have a napkin ready.

And the finish? Long, warm, and wonderfully toasty. As if you hadn't just eaten dessert, but gotten married.

The Brûlée Royale isn't your typical dram. It's dessert, statement, and royal delight all in one. Perfect with French desserts or - hand on heart - simply on its own, if you want to treat yourself to a little Versailles.

Conclusion: Anyone who loves vanilla, caramel, and a bit of drama will adore this whisky. And anyone who doesn't try it is missing out on a revolution in the glass.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Brûlée Royale - Compass Box tastes like

  • Nose: Initially, freshly caramelized crème brûlée is accompanied by aromas of vanilla custard, butter biscuits, toasted sugar, and a hint of panna cotta.
  • Palate: Creamy, full-bodied, and extremely smooth - the palate is pampered with notes of clotted cream, honey-malted sweetness, and grilled peaches. This is followed by tarte tatin, vanilla cream, and a subtle hint of nutmeg. Finally, milky notes, toasted sugar, and a surprising banana split emerge. A liquid dessert - almost too good not to be enjoyed with cutlery.
  • Finish: Long and pleasantly warm - vanilla, caramelized sugar, and light spice linger. A "toasty" finish that's more reminiscent of a delicious dessert than a classic whisky - and that's precisely what makes it so appealing.
