Portrait: What makes the Flaming Heart 25th Anniversary Edition - Compass Box special

Flaming Heart first saw the light of day in 2006 - inspired by a rock song by the musician M. Ward. For its eighth appearance, the blended malt presents itself as a powerful homage to peated whisky. To celebrate Compass Box's 25th anniversary, the makers have created a revised edition that brings together a carefully selected range of malt whiskies, including those from Benrinnes, Laphroaig, Williamson, and, in particular, Talisker.

The whiskies contained in this blend matured for up to 17 years in freshly charred American oak barrels and heavily toasted, custom-made French oak barrels. The Laphroaig was additionally refined in Marsala barriques.

The result is an intense aroma of oily smoke and spicy notes, interspersed with fruity nuances such as raspberry and apricot, as well as hints of biscuit dough. Tarred rope adds additional depth to the bouquet. On the palate, the smoke is even more concentrated, accompanied by powerful spices such as clove, pepper, and nutmeg.Medicinal peat meets bright, almost wine-like fruit aromas. The finish is smoky and woody with ash, menthol, and a hint of citrus oil - a multi-layered, impressive pleasure.

• Nose: intense, dense smoke with oily, spicy aromas, plus fruity Accents of raspberries and apricots - behind them a hint of cookie dough and notes of tarred rope
• Palate: on the palate, the smoke is even more present and complex - spicy components such as cloves, black pepper, and nutmeg are clearly evident, while at the same time, an exciting interplay unfolds between medicinal-like peat and bright, almost wine-like fruit notes
• Finish: long and complex on the finish - the smoke fades into a combination of wood and ash, accompanied by refreshing notes of menthol and fine citrus oils
