Profile: What Makes Yamazaki 18 Year Old Special
Yamazaki single malt is the first malt ever produced and bottled in Japan. The 18-year-old has a full body with pleasant oak tones; the finish is pleasantly soft and complex.
About 80% of the liquid matures in sherry casks, the rest in American and rare Japanese Mizunara oak.
Tasting Notes: What Yamazaki 18 Year Old Tastes Like
- Nose: Pot still rum and walnut, plus sherry and apple peels, citrus peel, plum and dark chocolate; a prominent Mizunara incense note
- Palate: Syrupy and rich, with a rum-and-cola sweetness countered by increasingly dry, tannic sherry wood; alternatively blackberry, strawberry jam, dates, dark chocolate, honeyed caramel and gentle spice
- Finish: Medium with plenty of raw ginger for heat and flavour, earthy and woody
