Portrait: What makes The Tyrconnell 10 year old Madeira Cask Finish special.
Imagine a racehorse galloping not across the Emerald Isle of Ireland, but directly through a cask of Madeira - and coming with gold medals and a slight buzz. Voilà: The Tyrconnell 10 year old Madeira Cask Finish.
This fine wine comes from Cooley, an Irish distillery that apparently thought: Why not mix history with a bit of alcohol? And voila - the venerable brand A.A. Watt & Co. was promptly revived. A little bit of nostalgia, a little bit of renaissance – all for good taste and a label that looks so stylish it could have been designed by the Earl of Whiskey himself.
The eponymous horse on the label was not only pretty to look at, but also a true winner. An underdog who won a major race - and today gallops across bottles as a flavor ambassador. Perhaps that's why they say: It runs like Tyrconnell. Or should we say: It matures like Tyrconnell?
The whiskey itself? First, it makes itself comfortable in bourbon Casks - its first home, so to speak, where it learns the basics of life (and being a whisky owner). Then it goes into a Madeira Cask for around 6 months. A kind of educational journey with a wine accent, you could say.
And Jim Murray? The whisk(e)y guru with the divine nose? He gives it 95 out of 100 points. In whisky circles, this is something like being knighted with a golden Glencairn glass.
In short: Tyrconnell 10 year old isn't just whiskey - it's a monument in liquid form. And powered by horsepower.
Tasting Notes: This is what The Tyrconnell 10 year old Madeira Cask Finish tastes like
- Nose: Invitingly sweet with distinct aromas of honey and juicy raisins - accompanied by a subtle, yet present spiciness that adds depth to the aroma - a hint of caramel pleasantly rounds off the bouquet and whets the appetite for the first sip
- Palate: Very soft and smooth on the palate - almost velvety - the spicy notes remain balanced in the background, allowing the honey and raisins to once again come to the fore - this is complemented by fruity hints of ripe berries, which give the taste a fresh, fruity nuance
- Finish: Long, warming, and harmonious - the finish lingers delightfully, leaving a pleasant warmth with a hint of sweetness and spice
