Dailuaine
A badger on the crest and a fire in the story: when the striking pagoda roof of Dailuaine distillery went up in flames in 1917, it was just one of several dramatic chapters in the more than 170-year history of what was once Speyside's largest distillery. Founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie in the picturesque "green valley" near Aberlour, Dailuaine grew into one of the industry's most significant names through its 1898 merger with Talisker, before the Distillers Company Limited took over in 1925. If you've never heard the name, you're in good company: around 98 percent of production still disappears into blends like Johnnie Walker today - only 2 percent is bottled as single malt, making Dailuaine one of the most underrated Speyside malts around.

Why does hardly anyone know Dailuaine?
Because only around 2% of production is bottled as single malt - the rest goes into blends like Johnnie Walker and other successful Diageo mixtures. Anyone who tries it neat discovers one of the most opulent, roundest Speyside malts around.
What happened to the distillery in 1917?
A devastating fire completely destroyed the distinctive pagoda roof. The distillery had to close temporarily and only reopened three years later - a fate that befell many Scottish distilleries throughout their history.
