For almost 50 years, the Speyside distillery GlenAllachie supplied malt almost exclusively for the Clan Campbell blend – until industry legend Billy Walker acquired it in 2017 and built an entirely new, independent range. As a standalone single malt brand, GlenAllachie has therefore only become known in recent years.
GlenAllachie stands for a refined, fruity-sweet Speyside style with intense cask depth – shaped by Walker's decades of experience at BenRiach and GlenDronach. How did an anonymous blend supplier become a celebrated single malt brand?
GlenAllachie was founded in 1967 by Mackinlay, McPherson & Co. – right in the middle of Scotch whisky history's biggest founding boom, when eleven new distilleries were built between 1960 and 1968 alone. Like most of these new distilleries, GlenAllachie served almost exclusively to supply blended whisky, above all the still-successful Clan Campbell (around 20 million bottles sold annually). After several changes of ownership (Invergordon Distillers in 1985, closure in 1987, Campbell Distillers/Pernod Ricard in 1989), everything changed in 2017: whisky veteran Billy Walker – previously responsible for reviving BenRiach and GlenDronach – bought the distillery together with Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson from Chivas Brothers. As early as July 2018, just nine months later, the new team launched GlenAllachie's very first standalone single malt range.
What makes GlenAllachie different under Billy Walker?
Walker is regarded as one of Scotland's most accomplished blenders and cask specialists. Under his leadership, the focus is on long, careful cask maturation and a wide range of cask types – from the core range to special bottlings such as the Moscatel wood finish. The bulk of production still goes into Clan Campbell, but the distillery's own single malt range has grown continuously since 2018.
