North of Scotland

How can a whisky distilled in 1972 only reach the market in 2015? At the North of Scotland distillery, that's exactly what happened: a cask distilled in 1972 was originally bottled in 2005 at 32 years old - and the bottles were then simply forgotten, until they were rediscovered in 2015 and relabelled by independent bottler Rest & Be Thankful. The site was founded in 1957 by George Christie, initially as the Strathmore distillery on the grounds of a former brewery in Cambus - curiously named "North of Scotland" despite actually sitting in the southern Lowlands. Its operating life lasted just 23 years: the grain distillery closed in 1980 and was largely demolished in 1993.

Why is a Lowland distillery called "North of Scotland"?

The name comes from the owning company, the "North of Scotland Distilling Company" under George Christie - even though the site in Cambus near Alloa actually sits in the southern Lowlands. Christie later also built the Speyside Distillery.

What was Strathmore?

Shortly after founding in 1957, the site initially experimented with malted barley under the name Strathmore, but switched entirely to grain whisky production after only a short time and adopted the North of Scotland name.

Flavour profile

Taste: Vanilla and spiced biscuit as a common thread, a lighter body than malt whisky, and completely free of smoke - typical of grain whisky from closed distilleries.

Recommended enjoyment: For collectors of rare "silent stills" - given its extreme rarity, more a special experience than an everyday whisky.
