Kingsbarns
Welcome to Kingsbarns, the youngest Lowland distillery, located right next to the famous golf courses of St Andrews. The story of the distillery, opened in 2014, began with a former golf caddie: Douglas Clement founded the Kingsbarns Company of Distillers in 2009 because golf-loving visitors kept asking for a distillery in the region – for a long time, there wasn't one.
In 2013, Wemyss Malts finally took over the project and converted the roughly 200-year-old East Newhall farm into a modern distillery. With Kingsbarns Coaltown, you will find the current core bottling of this still-young Lowland brand in our range.

How did a golf caddie become a distillery founder?
Douglas Clement worked as a golf caddie in the region around St Andrews and kept hearing the same question from visitors: why is there no whisky distillery here, in the heart of Scottish golf? In 2009, he founded the Kingsbarns Company of Distillers and spent the following years raising capital from 32 private investors as well as a government grant of £670,000. As a funding gap remained to the required total budget of £1.6 million, Clement sold the project to Wemyss Distillery Ltd in 2013.
How did an old farm become a distillery?
Wemyss converted the historic East Newhall farm, built around 1800, into a modern distillery. The conversion took three years; Kingsbarns officially opened in November 2014, with the first casks filled in 2015. In 2017, a gin distillery in a restored outbuilding rounded out the range – Darnley's Gin has been produced there ever since.
