Portrait: What makes the Yellow Spot 12 year old Pure Pot Still so special.

Yellow Spot - at first, that sounds a bit like a hip London coffee shop or a particularly aggressive wall paint from a hardware store. In fact, it's one of Ireland's last true single pot still whiskeys - and that's pretty special.

The story begins with Mitchell & Son, a venerable Dublin wine and spirits merchant that, since the 1920s, has not only sold fine spirits but also provided them with a color system - quite pragmatically: Green for young, yellow for middle-aged, red for a bit older, and blue… well, for particularly patient connoisseurs. The Yellow Spot represents 12 years of maturation, making it the perfect middle ground.

The whole thing is distilled at the famous Midleton Distillery in Cork - a true pilgrimage site for whiskey lovers and flavor hunters. The Yellow Spot is not only distilled there, but today is also bottled directly, without any detours.

This whiskey spends its time comfortably aged in former bourbon, sherry, and Malaga wine Casks - almost like an Irish vacation with detours to Spain and Kentucky. And let it be said: He is a gentleman in a golden jacket with an Irish soul and a wealth of continental experience.

In short: The Yellow Spot is more than just a whiskey - it is a piece of Irish history in a glass. And proof that color is sometimes a matter of taste.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Yellow Spot 12 year old Pure Pot Still tastes like

  • Nose: A complex, warm aroma rises from the glass: Ripe yellow fruits such as apricot and peach meet spicy oak, accompanied by honey, vanilla and a hint of green apple - behind this lie hints of roasted nuts, dried herbs and a gentle echo of sherry and Malaga wine - sweet, but never intrusive
  • Palate: Full-bodied, silky and complex - a harmonious balance of sweet fruitiness and finely tuned spice unfolds on the tongue - notes of baked apples, honeydew melon, cinnamon and nutmeg meet creamy caramel, subtle oak and a hint of pepper - the maturation in Malaga barrels brings an elegant sweetness that combines wonderfully with the typical pot still spice
  • Finish: Long, soft and complex - fruity notes linger, accompanied by a hint of dried fruit, some almond nougat and subtle spice - a delicate veil of oak and malty sweetness rounds off the experience - a finish that lingers long after and makes you want the next sip

War leider nicht so meins. Er hat eine strenge zu intensive Geschmacksnote, die für mich irgendwie aufgesetzt und zu dominant ist.
