Famous Grouse
In 1896, grocer Matthew Gloag simply wanted to share a good whisky with friends after a long day's work - and from this modest wish grew one of the most successful blended Scotch whiskies in history, created in his shop on Atholl Street in Perth. Originally sold as "Gloag's Grouse", Gloag chose the Scottish red grouse as the brand's emblem - the iconic label featuring the bird was personally sketched by his daughter Philippa. The name soon evolved into "The Famous Grouse", and the brand's rise continued unabated: since 1980, it has been Scotland's best-selling whisky without interruption - a record no other brand has managed to break in its own home market to this day.

Where does the name "Famous Grouse" come from?
Matthew Gloag initially sold his whisky as "Gloag's Grouse", named after the Scottish red grouse - as it grew more popular, the name evolved into "The Famous Grouse".
Who drew the brand's famous bird label?
Gloag's daughter Philippa designed the first illustration of the red grouse, which remains the bottle's trademark to this day.
