Auchroisk

In 1972, Justerini & Brooks completed a distillery near Mulben in Banffshire that was never meant to carry its own name in the first place – Auchroisk existed purely to supply blends, above all J&B. When the first single malt was bottled in the late 1970s, the Gaelic name turned out to be a marketing problem: almost no customer outside Scotland could pronounce "Auchroisk" correctly, so the bottling was renamed "The Singleton" in 1986. Only in 2001 did the original name return with the Flora & Fauna series, while "The Singleton" was kept for other Diageo malts such as Glen Ord and Dufftown. Anyone who isn't put off by the spelling discovers one of the most underrated Speyside malts around: soft, gently nutty, and carrying the region's characteristic fruity sweetness.

Why is Auchroisk sometimes called "The Singleton"?

Because international customers struggled to pronounce the Gaelic name (roughly "Ath-rusk", meaning "ford of the red stream"), IDV (Diageo's predecessor) decided in 1986 to market the single malt as "The Singleton of Auchroisk". Only with the Flora & Fauna series in 2001 did the Auchroisk name return to the label, though some bottlings still combine both names today.

Who is Auchroisk actually distilling for?

Most of the output still goes into blends, chiefly J&B Rare, one of the world's best-selling Scotch blends. Only a small portion is bottled as single malt, which explains the rarity of official releases.

Flavour profile

Taste: Soft and round, with ripe orchard fruit, a touch of honey and a gentle spiciness on the finish – an unassuming, approachable Speyside malt with no smoke.

Recommended enjoyment: Neat or with a drop of water as a relaxed nightcap, also a good starting point for newcomers to mild Speyside malts.

The 10-year-old Flora & Fauna bottling is the only officially released expression in regular supply and shows the distillery's character unfiltered: Auchroisk 10 Year Old Flora & Fauna.
