Raasay stands for an unusual dual approach: peated and unpeated spirit are distilled and matured separately, only married together at bottling. The Isle of Raasay Single Malt combines both styles in one bottle and is the entry point into this young distillery's range in our selection.

How did Raasay become the island's first legal distillery?

In 2014, Bill Dobbie and Alasdair Day founded R&B Distillers (Raasay & Borders) with the aim of building a new Scottish distillery. In 2015, they secured the vacant Borodale House, a Victorian building most recently used as a hotel, and converted it into a distillery, visitor centre, and luxury accommodation. In 2017, spirit ran legally from the stills here for the first time – after generations of illicit farmyard distilling on the island – making it the first official distillery in Raasay's history.

Why does Raasay mature in such unusual casks?

The distillery distils a peated and an unpeated spirit separately and matures both in three different cask types: rye whiskey casks, chinkapin oak casks, and Bordeaux red wine casks. The Isle of Raasay Single Malt, first released in spring 2021, ultimately marries components from all of these styles into a single core product – an unusually complex recipe, with six main components, for such a young distillery.
