Glen Ord
Since 1968, the large drum maltings on the Glen Ord site – now with 18 malting drums producing 37,000 tonnes a year – has supplied barley malt to numerous distilleries across the northern and north-eastern Highlands, including well-known names such as Talisker and Clynelish. The distillery's own whisky remains comparatively little known by contrast.
Glen Ord itself stands for a full-bodied, sweet Speyside style with spice, chocolate, and nutty notes, often with a smoky undertone. The single malt is marketed under the name "The Singleton of Glen Ord".

Why is Glen Ord in more whiskies than you'd think?
The distillery was founded in 1838 as the "Ord Distillery" under licence to Robert Johnstone and Donald McLennan, on the initiative of landowner Thomas Mackenzie, who always leased out the site rather than running it himself. After numerous changes of ownership – including James Watson & Son (1896) and Thomas Dewar (1923) – Glen Ord passed to the Distillers Company Limited in 1925 and has belonged to Diageo since 1985. Far more significant for the Scotch whisky industry than its own malt, however, is the drum maltings built on site in 1968, which continues to supply barley malt to numerous distilleries across the region today.
Why is the whisky called "Singleton"?
Similar to sister distilleries Dufftown and Glendullan, Diageo markets Glen Ord's single malt under the more memorable name "The Singleton of Glen Ord" – the core range spans regular age statements from 12 to 18 years, supplemented by annual special bottlings as part of the Diageo Special Releases.
