Founded in 2009, Eimverk remains Iceland's first and only whisky distillery to this day.

How did 163 trial distillations become Iceland's first whisky?
The family behind Eimverk founded the distillery in 2009 with the aim of producing premium Icelandic spirits strictly from local ingredients. It took four years and 163 trial distillations to get the recipe right – it was only in 2015 that the Flóki Young Malt, Iceland's first-ever whisky, reached the market. The brand is named after Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson, the Viking who, according to legend, was the first to deliberately sail to Iceland and gave the island its name.
What's the story behind the sheep-dung-smoked whisky?
In 2019, Eimverk introduced the Flóki Sheep Dung Smoked, a world-first specialty: since Iceland traditionally has almost no peat bogs but does have a long tradition of smoking with dried sheep dung (a historic food preservation method in a largely treeless country), the distillery applied this smoking technique to whisky malt for the first time. In doing so, Eimverk relies consistently on Icelandic terroir rather than imported Scottish peat.
