Old Pulteney
Whisky has been distilled since 1826 in the harbour town of Wick, home to the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland – named after Sir William Johnstone Pulteney, who once planned the district as a herring port. To this day, Old Pulteney carries the nickname "The Maritime Malt".

How did a distillery end up at one of Scotland's most unusual addresses?
James Henderson founded the Pulteney Distillery in 1826 in the district of Wick that bears his name, named after fishing entrepreneur Sir William Johnstone Pulteney, whose plans aimed to make Wick the capital of herring fishing. The distillery remained in family hands for almost a century before James Watson & Co. bought it in 1920. Rapid changes of ownership followed via John Dewar's & Sons (1923) and the Distillers Company Limited (1925), before the distillery closed in 1930. It was only revived in 1951 by lawyer Robert Cumming; Hiram Walker took over in 1955 and fully refurbished the site in 1959. Since 1995, Old Pulteney has belonged to Inver House Distillers.
Why is Old Pulteney called "The Maritime Malt"?
Wick sits at the very northern tip of the Scottish mainland, and the malt carries its closeness to the North Sea directly in its flavour: salty sea breeze, fine sweetness, and a touch of smoke. Wick itself, incidentally, holds a quirky side record – Ebenezer Place, at 2.06 metres long, is listed by Guinness World Records as the shortest street in the world.
