Portrait: What makes the Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur - Old Pulteney special
Anyone who hears the name Stroma already suspects: This isn't about gentle strolls, but rather some serious action. The Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur from Old Pulteney doesn't bear its name by chance. "Stroma" comes from Old Norse and means something like "island of the current" - a rather fitting description for the small, windswept island off the northeast coast of Scotland. Where the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean clash, the infamous Swilkie whirlpool is formed, which has impressed and intimidated seafarers for centuries. In short: a place better observed than sailed into.
This rugged setting perfectly suits the Old Pulteney brand, which, like few others, embodies maritime whisky history. The distillery was founded in Wick in 1826 – a former herring port where life was long dictated by the rhythm of the sea. Sailors, nets, salt in the air: all of this shaped not only the town but also the character of the distillery. Old Pulteney is therefore often affectionately referred to as Scotland's "Maritime Malt" – a title that has less to do with marketing than with genuine heritage.
The Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur embraces precisely this story. It is based on carefully selected Old Pulteney malt whiskies and is conceived as a tribute to the forces of nature around the Scottish north coast. The focus is not on flashy displays, but rather on the idea of combining tradition and accessibility. A drink, then, that shows respect for the past without seeming dusty. Stroma is thus less a quiet library patron and more a good-natured sailor storytelling by the fireplace. Full of tales of storms, currents, and Scottish coasts – and always ready to add another anecdote. A liqueur that proves strong heritage and a touch of humor go together perfectly.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur - Old Pulteney tastes like
- Nose: On the nose, Stroma is pleasantly inviting and balanced. Sweet aromas of honey, caramel, and toffee take center stage, accompanied by a hint of dried fruit. Maritime notes resonate in the background – a light, salty breeze recalls the proximity to the sea. Subtle spice aromas and a fine smokiness lend the fragrance additional depth without being overpowering.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky liqueur is soft and rounded. Sweet notes initially unfold generously, carried by hints of dark sugar and gentle vanilla. The underlying Old Pulteney malt whiskies contribute structure and character, preventing the liqueur from being overly sweet. A subtle, rugged undertone adds excitement and is reminiscent of the rugged Scottish coastline that gives Stroma its name.
- Finish: The finish is warm, mild, and soothing. The sweetness fades slowly, accompanied by light spice and wood notes. A gentle hint of smoke lingers for a moment, harmoniously rounding off the overall impression. A well-balanced aftertaste that lasts and leaves you wanting another sip.

Der Stroma ist sehr süß. Pur ist dieser Liqueur etwas schwierig, aber zum Mixen mit Whisky sehr gut geeignet.
