Miltonduff
On the site of a formerly illegal farm distillery called "Milton", owned by the Duff family, Andrew Peary and Robert Bain founded the Miltonduff distillery in 1824 - shortly after the liberalising Excise Act came into force. More than a century later, in 1936, the Canadian company Hiram Walker bought the site and immediately handed management to its newly acquired subsidiary George Ballantine & Son - the start of a close relationship between Miltonduff and the Ballantine's blend family that continues to this day. From 1964, the distillery also experimented with so-called Lomond stills, producing a distinct malt called Mosstowie between 1964 and 1981 - a rare curiosity still only released today by independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail.

What was Mosstowie?
Between 1964 and 1981, Miltonduff experimented with special "Lomond stills", which used technical modifications to produce a different malt character - bottled under the name Mosstowie. Since these stills were long ago removed, Mosstowie bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail, Duncan Taylor or Signatory are sought-after rarities today.
Why is Miltonduff so rare as a single malt?
Most of the production has gone into Ballantine's blends since Hiram Walker's takeover in 1936. Miltonduff itself has practically no official single malt bottlings, making independent bottlers the only source.
Flavour profile
Taste: A malty middleweight with floral and slightly grassy notes, subtle sweetness and a soft, unassuming body.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat as an uncomplicated aperitif, or as an entry point into Speyside malts beyond the well-known names.
