Few distilleries enjoy as much respect among connoisseurs while remaining so little-known to the wider public as Longmorn. Whisky writer Jim Murray even ranked it among the world's ten best distilleries in his "The Complete Guide to Whisky" – and Longmorn is one of the very few Speyside distilleries to have produced continuously since its founding in 1894, without ever being mothballed.
Founded by John Duff, Charles Shirres, and George Thomson on the site of a 7th-century chapel, Longmorn still primarily supplies valuable blending components for the Chivas Brothers group today. Where does the unusual name Longmorn come from?
The distillery site was once home to a 7th-century chapel, built in honour of the missionary St Marnoch. In Gaelic, the place was called "Lhanmorgund" or "Lannmarnoch" – "the church of the holy Marnoch" – from which the name Longmorn evolved over the centuries. The distillery was founded in 1894 by John Duff, who had already gained experience as manager at Glendronach and as co-founder of Glenlossie, together with local investors Charles Shirres and George Thomson.
How did Longmorn end up with Pernod Ricard?
In 1897, John Duff bought out his two partners to become sole owner; just a year later, he founded the sister distillery Benriach right next door. In 1970, Longmorn merged with Glen Grant and Glenlivet to form "The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd". In 1978, the Chivas & Glenlivet Group (part of Seagram) took over the company, which was in turn acquired by Pernod Ricard in 2001. Between 1972 and 1974, the number of stills grew from four to eight to meet steadily rising demand for Longmorn as a blending component.
