Lindores Abbey
In 1494, Scotland's royal account books recorded a remarkable instruction from King James IV: "eight bolls of malt" were to be delivered to the monk Friar John Cor of Lindores Abbey, so that he could produce "aqua vitae" – the "water of life" – from it. It is the oldest written record of whisky production in Scotland.
The abbey, founded in 1191 on the banks of the Firth of Tay, served as a spiritual centre for centuries, until the Lindores Abbey Distillery was built on the very same historic ground in 2017 – inspired directly by this archival discovery. The first distillation took place on 13 December 2017. With Lindores MCDXCIV, you will find the core bottling named after this legendary year, from what calls itself the "spiritual home of Scotch whisky", in our selection.

Why is Lindores Abbey considered the "birthplace of Scotch whisky"?
In 1191, David, Earl of Huntingdon, founded Lindores Abbey and populated it with Tironensian monks from Thiron in France. Over the centuries, the wealthy abbey welcomed significant guests such as King David II, Edward I of England, and Robert the Bruce. The decisive find for whisky history, however, came much later, in the royal Exchequer Rolls of 1494: there, King James IV ordered that "eight bolls of malt" be delivered to Friar John Cor, a monk known as an apothecary at the royal court, for the production of "aqua vitae" – the oldest written record of whisky production in Scotland.
How did an archival find become a modern distillery?
It was this very historical entry that inspired the building of the modern Lindores Abbey Distillery on the same site by the Firth of Tay. The first distillation took place on 13 December 2017 – over 500 years after Friar John Cor's first documented "aqua vitae". The distillery has since deliberately styled itself the "spiritual home of Scotch whisky", naming its core bottling after the legendary year 1494 in Roman numerals: MCDXCIV.
