The idea was born in 1998 during a ski trip shared by eight friends from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, who realised that Sweden had not a single whisky distillery. In 1999, they founded Mackmyra Svensk Whisky – to this day Scandinavia's first and most significant whisky distillery.

How did a ski trip become Scandinavia's first whisky distillery?
Eight friends from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm realised, during a shared ski trip in 1998, that Sweden had no whisky distillery at all – and decided to change that. In 1999, they founded Mackmyra Svensk Whisky; the first spirit was distilled that same year, and the first small 30-litre cask was filled in 2000. The first own distillery was built in 2002 in an old power station in the village of Mackmyra. In 2011, production moved into a purpose-built, eight-storey tower outside Gävle known as the "Gravity Distillery": ingredients travel from top to bottom through the building – an energy-saving principle that doubled capacity while cutting energy consumption by around 45%.
What makes Mackmyra so consistently Swedish?
Mackmyra sources all its raw materials for whisky-making exclusively from Sweden. From the start, the distillery relied on two contrasting base recipes: the fruity, delicate "Elegant" and the smoky, peppery "Smoky", in which juniper twigs and peat moss provide smoky notes.
