Portrait: What makes the El Dorado - High Ester Blend 2014 PM/DHE special

Sometimes it feels like you've waited for years - and then suddenly there it is: the El Dorado High Ester Blend 2014 PM/DHE. Almost like an old friend who had announced his arrival but had taken a short detour to explore half the world. And yes, the anticipation was absolutely justified.

The El Dorado Rum brand originates from Guyana, more precisely from Demerara Distillers Limited – a place where rum isn't simply produced, but truly celebrated. The region along the Demerara River has a long tradition stretching back to its colonial past.
Historic stills are not only on display here, but are still in use. Old school? Absolutely. But that's precisely what makes it so appealing. And then this blend comes into play – with the almost exotic-sounding addition of "High Ester." Normally, one would associate that with Jamaica, but Guyana apparently thought, "Why not us?" The result is an unusual, almost rebellious interpretation of the classic Demerara style.
At its heart are two true heavyweights: the legendary Port Mourant French Savalle Still and the Double Retort Copper Pot Still – a copper still steeped in history. Both distillates were produced in 2014 and then allowed to mature undisturbed for a full 10 years.
Patience is therefore not an empty promise here, but part of the concept. What makes this rum even more special: The production run is limited to just 240 bottles. That's not "rare," that's more like "blink-and-you've-missed-it."
In short: This El Dorado is no ordinary representative of its kind, but rather a curious boundary-crosser with a sense of tradition. One that shows that even long-established rum nations are still good for surprises – when they feel like it.
