Portrait: What makes the A.H. Riise XO Reserve Ambre d'Or special
When a name like A.H. When Riise XO Reserve Ambre d'Or appears, you already suspect: This is not a drink that simply came about "on the side." It sounds more like a composition where someone nodded very seriously and said: "We're going to do this properly now – and with style."
The story behind it leads back to Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish pharmacist with a pronounced sense of adventure – or at least for good spirits. In the 19th century, he found himself in what were then the Danish West Indies, now known as the US Virgin Islands. There, he could theoretically have devoted himself entirely to pharmacy. In practice, however, he decided to also work on perfecting liquid delights on the side. After all, one has to set priorities.
The XO Reserve Ambre d'Or is the result of this time-honored philosophy: Here, various distillates are combined, aged for up to 20 years. One could say that each one brings its own little life story – and together they form a kind of class reunion of exceptionally well-aged personalities.
The aging in former sweet wine casks is particularly exciting. These casks have already had a fulfilling previous life and are now getting a second career. It's a bit as if they're saying: "Retirement? That'll come later. Now things are just getting interesting."
And it is precisely this additional aging step that demonstrates how much attention to detail A.H. Riise places on its craft. What makes the Ambre d'Or so special is therefore less a single characteristic, but rather the attitude behind it: time, care, and the willingness to do things not just "well enough." Here, music is composed, not produced.
In short: The A.H. Riise XO Reserve Ambre d'Or is not a quick indulgence for in between. It's more like an elegantly told novel – with many chapters, a touch of the exotic, and the feeling that patience ultimately pays off.
Tasting Notes: This is how the A.H. Riise XO Reserve Ambre d'Or tastes like
- Nose: On the nose, aromas of fresh hay and vanilla emerge, reminiscent of a walk through a summer meadow. These are joined by hints of butterscotch and crème brûlée, which lend the aroma a gentle, sweet, and warm depth.
- Palate: On the palate, the spirit begins with vibrant notes of lemon drops. This is followed by a soft, creamy vanilla that unfolds fully. The influence of the Sauternes wine casks is clearly recognizable and significantly shapes the overall impression.
- Finish: The finish is rich, long, and pleasantly creamy. The vanilla cream remains present, providing a harmonious and lingering conclusion.
