Portrait: What makes the Don Papa Masskara special
Don Papa Masskara is not a quiet representative of his profession—he comes with a mask, paint, and a rather moving story in tow. This rum-based spirit is named after the Maskara Festival on the Philippine island of Negros, one of Southeast Asia's most colorful and vibrant festivals.
But, as is so often the case, this story doesn't begin with confetti, but with a crisis. In 1980, Negros was doubly shaken: the price of sugarcane, the island's lifeblood, was in freefall, and in April of the same year, the tragic sinking of the passenger ship MV Don Juan claimed numerous lives. Economic hardship and collective grief hung like a gray veil over the region. The response? Color. Music. Masks. And a festival consciously dedicated to smiles.
Thus, in October 1980, the Masskara Festival was born – a shared symbol of hope, supported by artists, citizens, and local entrepreneurs. To this day, the festival stands for the determination not to be defeated by setbacks. Don Papa Masskara embodies precisely this spirit. The Don Papa brand itself is deeply connected to the island of Negros, known for its particularly high-quality sugarcane thanks to its fertile, volcanic soil.
The base is molasses, often reverently referred to as "black gold," from which the spirit is distilled. It is then aged in American oak barrels – a classic step with an international flair. However, what makes Don Papa Masskara special lies in its Filipino soul: only native ingredients are used in its production. A pot-still infusion of Calamansi and Siling Labuyo meets local honey, firmly anchoring the spirit in its homeland. Ultimately, Don Papa Masskara is more than just a name with an exotic sound. It's a tribute to resilience, joie de vivre, and the ability to smile even in dark times - sometimes with a mask, but always with poise.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Don Papa Masskara tastes like
Nose: Rich honey aromas are revealed on the nose, accompanied by a delicate hint of fresh citrus fruits, lending the bouquet lightness and freshness.
Palate: On the palate, the spirit is soft and fruity. Delicate notes of honey blend harmoniously with candied fruits and pleasantly sweet citrus fruits, creating a well-balanced experience.
Finish: The finish is long and robust. Wonderful fruity notes linger and provide a well-rounded, harmonious finale.
