Anyone who thinks good whiskey has to come from Kentucky has obviously never heard of two friends named Jay and Dave. The two founded their own distillery in Richmond, Virginia, in 2008 – not to play along, but to shake up the American whiskey world. And lo and behold: It worked. The Reservoir Distillery is small, independent, and quite self-confident. There's no misrepresentation here – each whiskey is made from 100% just one type of grain. So no mishmash, just a clear edge. In the case of the Virginia Rye, that means: 100% rye, a full load of personality.
The whole thing isn't aged in just any boring barrel, but in custom-made 20-liter quarter casks with alligator char – that doesn't just sound wild, it is. The barrels are so heavily charred inside that you'd almost think a BBQ took place inside.
And because "handcrafted" is more than just a marketing buzzword here, each bottle is sealed by hand with wax, individually numbered, and almost lovingly released into the world.
The rye, by the way, comes directly from the neighborhood – from fields within a 60-kilometer radius. It doesn't get much more regional than this.
Reservoir Virginia Rye isn't a whiskey for quiet conversation. It's for people who prefer to toast with a wink rather than an empty glass.

- Nose: A subtle hint of honey and crème brûlée opens the bouquet, followed by yeast, cardamom, and cloves - joined by camphor, burnt sugar, and spicy cedarwood - complex and multi-layered
- Palate: Initially, a subtle sweetness is quickly replaced by floral notes and dark chocolate - as the finish progresses, aniseed and peppery spice come to the fore, accompanied by a hint of caramel in the background
