German Whisky
Whisky and Germany - to many enthusiasts, that first sounds like a contradiction, yet the German whisky scene now looks back on more than two decades of growing tradition. Out of Germany's long-standing schnapps-distilling culture - grain spirit in the north, fruit brandy in the south - independent whisky distilleries have emerged, some of which, like Slyrs from Bavaria or St. Kilian from Franconia, are attracting international attention. Because many distilleries treat whisky as a complement to their core business rather than their sole focus, the German whisky landscape is unusually diverse and regionally distinct - from the coastal maturation of the Sild brand on Sylt to the smoky Harz mountain bottlings from Willowburn and Elsburn.

How is German whisky made?
Germany has a long tradition of schnapps distilling - many whisky distilleries grew out of existing fruit or grain spirit operations. This has led to an unusually large number of small, regional single-brand producers rather than one unified national style.
What does German whisky taste like?
The range spans from the honeyed, fruity Slyrs from Bavaria to the dark, fruity, sometimes smoky Elsburn from the Harz mountains, all the way to intensely peat-smoked bottlings like Elch Whisky's "Torf vom Dorf" - there's a German counterpart for nearly every palate.
Which German distilleries are especially worth trying?
St. Kilian: Franconian single malt, Germany's first distillery devoted solely to whisky. Slyrs: Bavarian single malt with an impressive visitor centre. Elsburn (formerly Glen Els): Dark, fruity Harz whisky matured in sherry and port casks. Willowburn: Also from the Harz, smoky and powerful. Sild: Coastal maturation on the island of Sylt, in collaboration with Slyrs.
Start with Slyrs Classic or Elsburn The Harz.
