Anyone who thinks good whisky only comes from Scotland should take a look at Lower Saxony - more specifically, Wöltingerode near Goslar, where the Hercynian Distilling Co. has been distilling some pretty serious whisky for several years. And with so much passion that even seasoned Highlanders would nod in recognition. Perhaps. Secretly.
The Willowburn Ember Batch No. 003 comes from this German distillery and is part of the "Willowburn" series – named after an imaginary river that sounds as if Tolkien had a hand in it.
Hercynian Distillers do things a little differently. They rely on artisanal production, unusual barrel aging, and, above all, a lot of heart and soul. They don't simply replicate what works in Scotland – they experiment, refine, and create their own unique style using German oak barrels, a craft approach, and the courage to be different.
The Ember series – as the name suggests – plays with fire. Not literally, but metaphorically with aromatic intensity and depth. Batch No. 003 is therefore not just another whisky, but a small statement: Yes, that works in Germany too. And really well.
In short: Willowburn Ember isn't a quiet follower in the whiskey orchestra, but rather the electric guitarist with a beard – handmade, distinctive, and definitely not off the shelf.
