Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix Premium Tasting Set special
The Old St. Croix Premium Tasting Set is essentially a small history book – only more practical, liquid, and divided into three handy 20ml chapters. Anyone who has ever wondered how to elegantly package almost 200 years of brand history into one set will find the answer here. Spoiler alert: It takes Caribbean roots, Danish orderliness, and a man with a very sonorous name.
The story begins with Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish pharmacist who, in 1838, produced not only medicines but also high-quality spirits in what were then the Danish West Indies. His products quickly found their way across the Atlantic—and apparently into the right hands. Awards, medals, and loyal customers soon followed.
One of these awards is the inspiration for the XO Reserve - 1888 Copenhagen Medal. This blend commemorates Riise's family's success at the Great Nordic Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1888. Even then, it was clear: those who think internationally need raw materials from the Caribbean and Central America, as well as patience during maturation. The XO Reserve bridges precisely this gap between history and modern interpretation.
Things get a bit more philosophical with Non Plus Ultra Very Rare. The Latin name once meant the end of the known world - at Old St. Croix it marks more the point at which the Master Distiller says: "Well, it doesn't get any better than this today." This series is only released when truly exceptional casks find their way into the blend. No time pressure, no serial production – more like the liquid version of "quality prevails." The maritime finale is the Royal Danish Navy. The Danish Navy was one of Riise's first major customers, as life at sea was harsh and demanded reliable supplies. Officers drank it neat, the crew diluted – it was called grog. This bottling is a modern homage to that era when spirits were still an integral part of daily life on board. Ultimately, the Premium Tasting Set is an invitation to discovery: three bottlings, three stories, and one common denominator – Old St. Croix. History to pour, without dusty archives.

Herbal notes of eucalyptus and mint add freshness, while a subtle hint of balsamic reduction and black tea lends depth and elegance to the overall impression.
