Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy Frogman Conventus Ranae special

The Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy Frogman Conventus Ranae is not a rum that knocks quietly. It rather kicks the door open – naturally, in a controlled, professional manner, and with a 60% ABV tailwind. This bottling is entirely dedicated to the legendary Danish Navy Frogmen, a combat diver unit that enjoys an excellent reputation within NATO. These are people who would presumably remain calm even when others have long since called for the towel.
The name "Frogman" isn't a cute reference to amphibians, but rather the official designation of this elite unit. Fittingly, the addition of "Conventus Ranae" carries the Latin charm of a secret meeting – roughly translated as "Assembly of Frogs." One immediately pictures serious faces, cold water, and absolute concentration. Croaking noises are purely optional. Behind this bottling is the long-established brand A. H. Riise, which, for trademark reasons, now operates under the name Old St. Croix.
However, the brand remains true to its roots: maritime history, proud labels, and spirits with a message. The Frogman is far more than just a name on a bottle, as a portion of the proceeds goes directly to the veterans' association Conventus Ranae. This strengthens the bond between active and former combat divers and their families – a task that is at least as important as any mission. By the end of 2024, over €181,000 had already been raised for this work through the sale of this bottling.
A figure that impressively demonstrates that enjoyment and responsibility can indeed go hand in hand – even at 60% ABV. The Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy Frogman is thus a tribute to courage, discipline, and camaraderie.
A spirit that not only demands respect visually, but also tells a story that extends far beyond the bottle.

In short: not a rum-based blend for lifeguards, but for people with a sense of seafaring, strength, and a twinkle in their eye.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy Frogman Conventus Ranae tastes like

  • Nose: Spicy aromas open the bouquet with hints of coriander and cardamom. Accompanying this are subtle herbal nuances and a delicate, fruity sweetness of ripe oranges and bananas, which lend the aroma a pleasant lightness.

  • Palate: On the palate, initially slightly spicy, yet very pleasant and smooth in the mouthfeel. As time progresses, a distinctly fruitier side unfolds, with orange and banana notes once again coming to the fore and creating a well-balanced overall impression.

  • Finish: The finish is medium-long and warming. Fruity accents and spicy elements remain harmoniously present and linger in a beautiful, balanced harmony.
