Portrait: What makes the Savanna Métis special

Imagine: on the shores of the Indian Ocean, at the imposing foot of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, lies the Savanna Distillery - a place where rum is not simply produced, but almost celebrated. Rum has been handcrafted here in the French overseas department of Réunion since the 19th century, long before Instagram influencers promised a tropical feel. However, the distillery's current heyday dates back to Émile Hugot, internationally known as "Monsieur Sucre". In the 1950s, he led Savanna into the future with the precision of a sugar guru, making the brand known worldwide and proving that sugar cane could do more than just end up in coffee.

Savanna is no ordinary rum distillery. Here, Rhum Agricole, Rhum Traditionnel, and the exotic Grand Arôme Rum are produced – one of only a few in the world that can afford this luxury. Unusually, yet ingeniously, not only fresh sugarcane juice but also molasses is used – exclusively between July and November, giving the rum production a seasonal touch of "only the very best." Free of additives and non-chill filtered, Savanna rums reflect the wild, tropical beauty of the island.

And this is precisely where Savanna Métis comes in – a rum that unites the distillery's heritage and innovation in a single glass. It is like a multicultural cocktail of traditions: a "métissage" made from the island's finest rhum varieties, matured under the tropical sun and accompanied by the gentle hum of the sugarcane fields. A rum that proudly proclaims: “I am Savanna, but a little different.”

In short: Savanna Métis is a liquid monument to craftsmanship, island history and the unwavering love for sugar cane. Anyone who has this rum on their shelf really only needs a little sunshine and a sea breeze to create the perfect tropical moment – even if the weather is typically gray and Central European.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Savanna Métis tastes like

  • Nose: An inviting basket of tropical fruits mingles with floral aromas and a hint of vanilla. The nose detects fresh sugarcane notes, honey, and delicate hints of dried fruit. With a little aeration, warm, woody undertones unfold, reminiscent of freshly sawn oak.
  • Palate: On the palate, Savanna Métis is round and smooth. Initially fruity and lively, with notes of banana, pear, and ripe peaches, subtle spice nuances develop, reminiscent of mild cinnamon and nutmeg. The balance between fresh sweetness and subtle spice creates a pleasant, harmonious structure.
  • Finish: The finish is long, soft, and elegant. Fruity impressions linger along with a fine hint of caramel and oak. Subtle spicy notes round off the experience and leave a warming, well-rounded finish.
