Profile: What Makes Old Monk XXX Black Rum Special
Old Monk is an Indian rum brand and first reached the market on 19 December 1954. The “vatted rum” was devised under the direction of Ved Rattan Mohan, who took inspiration from the calm, frugal life of Benedictine monks and the drinks they made – hence the name. To this day Old Monk is produced by Mohan Meakin in Ghaziabad in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
The Black Rum is bottled exclusively for Germany and is a seven-year-old blend from the column still. It cannot deny its Indian origin: exotic spices are clearly present in the aroma, yet it is pleasantly fruity and not too sweet. Like all Old Monk rums, this one is exceptionally soft – caramel and vanilla take centre stage, underpinned by fine spice.
Tasting Notes: What Old Monk XXX Black Rum Tastes Like
- Nose: Exotic spices shape the nose, plus a fruity, not-too-sweet base with warm caramel, milk chocolate and vanilla; in the background a hint of oak, molasses and raisins
- Palate: Pleasantly fruity and soft with very nice spice: a creamy start with caramel and dark chocolate, then growing peppery spice and dark dried fruit
- Finish: Soft and warm, medium in length – with molasses, some oak and a light peppery note

Guter, günstiger Rum
Ein Rum, der mit seinem Geruch und einem angenehm würzigen Charakter schon mal zum Genießen einlädt. Kurze kräftige Note, die dann weich im Abgang wird.
Preis-Leistung ist völlig in Ordnung.
Cola kann man machen, muss man aber nicht zwingend.

Guter Rum, wunderbar gewürzt. Um Klassen besser als deutscher Allerwelts - Rum. Schmeckt klasse als Grog oder mit Coala.
