Portrait: What makes The Islay Connection 10 year old so special
When two whiskies meet on the Scottish island of Islay, it's a bit like a meeting of old island neighbors: They know each other, they respect each other - and sometimes You discover that together you're even more exciting than alone.
This is precisely the principle behind The Islay Connection 10 year old, a bottling that combines two very different interpretations of the famous whisky island. Responsible for this encounter is the independent bottler North Star Spirits from Glasgow. The company has made a name for itself by tracking down select casks from various distilleries, giving them a new home in the bottle, and occasionally arranging a surprising "blind date" for them - as is the case here.
For "The Islay Connection," North Star invited two distilleries that speak almost different dialects on the island. On the one hand, there's Bowmore Distillery, one of Islay's oldest distilleries. Founded in 1779, it's one of the island's historical cornerstones and lies directly on the shores of Loch Indaal - so close to the sea that you can easily imagine the Atlantic air regularly strolling through the warehouse.
The second partner comes from the equally famous, but stylistically quite distinct, Bruichladdich Distillery. This distillery is known for sometimes going against the grain – which certainly takes courage on an island in the Atlantic. Since its revival in the early 2000s, Bruichladdich has stood for experimentation, transparency, and a modern take on Scotch whisky.
For this bottling, a 2015 Bowmore from an ex-bourbon barrel was combined with a 2012 Bruichladdich from a refill sherry hogshead. Two vintages, two cask types, two distilleries – a mini Islay conference in a glass.
With 10 years of maturation and a strictly limited release, this bottling is aimed at curious whisky enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone who enjoys discovering what happens when two Islay characters decide to share their stories.
Or, to put it another way: The Islay Connection is proof that sometimes the greatest encounters can happen on a small island. And luckily, they fit comfortably into a bottle.
